Last night we were awoken at 4 AM by the sound of a vehicular crash, an explosion, and then flames rising higher than the 12 foot walls of our hotel. We were unable to see what was happening, but within 15 minutes a fire truck came blaring sirens. We learned this morning there was a speeding motorbiker who crashed into a tuk tuk, killing the tuk tuk driver and nonfatally burning his two passengers. Don't know what happened to the motobike driver. Alcohol is a common cause of speeding accidents. We were told if this happened in a less affluent part of town, devoid of government official residences, it would have taken significantly longer for a response, and that the fire truck would not have turned on the water until they had been paid. Too bizarre to be anything but true.

This is the memorial placed at the site of the accident this morning
It being the weekend we began our exploration of the city by visiting the Russian market, so named as the Russians were the predominant foreigners in the mid eighties when the market was formed. It is a warren of narrow laned stalls selling everything from meat and produce to silk, tourist curios, DVD ripoffs, motor bike parts, toys etc.

| Praying that the ice will play nice, unlike the iced mango shake I had in India which resulted in amoebic dysentery. We survived so far! |
I am wishing you both no more dramatics at 4 am!! I can't imagine what you must have been thinking. Your pictures are fabulous. Are there radiology residents?
ReplyDeleteThe markets are so colorful. Glad you are both safe after the explosion!
