First Day

We arrived last night around midnight with no problems, after flying for 23 hours. We deferred the hospital's invitation to begin work at 8:00 AM this morning, opting for one day of adjustment. The hotel owners are an Australian-Pakistani couple, who recently adopted a Cambodian girl. Our "boutique" hotel was the former department of propaganda after the Vietnamese ousted the Pol Pot regime. It was built in the 60's as a private home, and subsequently given to Princess Bopha Devi, sister of the current King of Cambodia, and a famed traditional Cambodian ballet dancer.

Our first breakfast was fresh papaya juice, croissant, omelet, and french press coffee

We were seduced into our first impromptu tuk tuk tour by Kim, not his real name.,but given to him by an appreciative Korean customer.

Kim showed us several sites, the significance of which was often lost on us because his accent and traffic noise

He took us to Diamond City, a large area of new upscale Chinese development on an island in the Mekong River. There were many women dressed like this sweeping

Another sweeper

At ground level the tuk tuk experience of noise, dust, and chaotic traffic was an effective morning jolt
